How Does Healthcare Benefit from ICD 10 to ICD 11 Transition?

The 10th version of International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) has been a popular topic in the past but nowadays people are showing more interest in ICD-11 since June 2018 when the WHO released ICD 11. It will be presented at the World Health Assembly in May 2019 and is expected to take effect by January 2022, according to WHO.

ICD-11 is in the process of development for a decade and it has been created keeping in mind the key causes due to which people die. With the introduction of ICD-11, healthcare professionals will be able to analyse such problems better and work on them accordingly. Acting as the foundation for worldwide health trends and stats, the ICD-11 consists of around 55,000 unique codes for diseases, death causes and injuries. This helps the healthcare professionals to share health-related information worldwide without barriers of languages.

When compared to ICD-10, the ICD-11 differs on one of the major points such as the coding scheme i.e. the structuring of codes. In ICD-11, the 3-character category codes are changed to four. This format always includes an alphabetic character in position two while the number is always placed in the third place. Moreover, in any code, the first character is correlated to the chapter number. For example, the first character of the code is the same as the chapter number for chapters 1-9. In the following chapters i.e. chapter 10-27, the first character will be a letter. Therefore, all the codes of a single chapter will begin with one and the same character.

ICD-11 is also compiled in a complete electronic form thus making it easy to use for the digital-friendly users today. Many healthcare professionals have contributed and are involved in the development process of ICD-11. The ICD team at WHO received around 10,000 revision proposals through healthcare workers. The current release will act as an advance preview for the other countries to prepare themselves on using the new version of ICD and train health professionals accordingly.

Professionals such as health programme managers, data collection specialists, health specialists who are responsible for tracking global health progress and national Health insurers whose reimbursements rely on ICD coding also use ICD. With ICD-11 in place, it has become easier to track progress in medicine and healthcare as all antimicrobial resistance codes align with Global Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance System (GLASS). ICD-11 also includes new chapters on traditional medicines and sexual health which will help in studying these fields and conditions related to them better.

As ICD-11 provides more clarification on the basis of types of diseases, it is superior than ICD-10. ICD-11 better captures the healthcare data relating to the safety of the patients. This prevents better identification of unnecessary events such as unsafe hospital workflows etc. These can be detected in advance and handled before creating any issues.
